What a week! I just got back from an engagement in Italy. Talk about exciting - on top of getting to see all the sights of Rome, I had the chance to perform for a large audience that was a mix of Italian/English speakers, which is always tricky.
I might have been in trouble, had it not been for the time I worked on Costa Cruises way back in 2001. You see, while working on that ship for 7 months, not more than 9 people spoke English, making it very much a course of "immersive Italian" lessons. Learning what I learned there enabled me to connect with the portion of the audience I definitely would have otherwise lost. It reminds me of Johnny Carson's words to Steve Martin, when he told that legendary performer, "You'll use everything you ever knew." How right he was.
